She began her career in the early 1970s and first gained attention for her role in the film Badlands (1973). Her career-defining role came in 1976 when she played the title character of Carrie White in Brian De Palma's horror film Carrie, based on the first novel by Stephen King, for which she earned an Oscar nomination (very rare for an actor or actress in a horror movie) (wikipedia)
